The specialty of internal medicine is characterized by a deep focus on systemic disease and diseases in the inner organs – diseases often treated with non-invasive or minimally invasive medical procedures and medicine. Diagnostics is often based on the patients’ medical history together with a physical examination, image and functional medicine, clinical physiology, endoscopy and clinical chemistry. Patients are in all ages, from adolescent to elderly.
The internal medicine specialist training includes Internal medicine (including emergency medicine), Cardiology, Endocrinology, Pulmonary medicine, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Rheumatology, Hematology, Neurology, Infectious diseases.
Our Centre of Excellence in Internal Medicine is one of Skåne University Hospital’s largest clinics where we have 5 in-patients wards and two emergency wards where we treat the most severely ill patients. We constantly strive to give our patient the best possible care from admission to discharge.
Within this area of expertise, we have prominent research both within the country of Sweden and international. We annually publicize around 140 scientific papers in international journals. In our research we aim towards better prevention, diagnostics, care and treatment for the major NCD´s, both regarding acute care and long-term treatments. The hub within our research is one of Sweden´s biggest clinical research facilities, KFE.
