Tissue Bank

The Largest Tissue and Biobank in Scandinavia

Skåne University Hospital in Lund has the largest tissue and biobank in Scandinavia. Established in 1985, over 200 patients annually receive donated tissue from our bank to treat cases ranging from hearing or vision impairment to cardiovascular diseases. Our tissue bank stores samples such as heart valves, corneas, hearing bones, skin, tendons and joints from deceased donors, for the purpose of transplantation and other medical uses.

Skåne University Hospital’s tissue and biobank has extensive experience of international collaborations. In addition to tissue exchange, we also share our experience and knowledge. Our high-end facilities have a sophisticated, tailored software system to track each tissue sample, in accordance with EU regulations, which contributes to the advancement of modern medicine and treatment.

Biobank Sweden is a collaboration between healthcare, academia, industry and patient organizations in Sweden. The goal of the extended collaboration is to build a joint, improved and sustainable national biobank infrastructure for healthcare, academia and industry, with the best conditions for both national and international collaboration. 200 of the 450 registered Bio Banks, are kept by the Healthcare Regions. They store about 90% or 150M of the saved samples. 50 Biobanks are kept by the State and about 200 by private entities such as private healthcare providers and medical companies/clinical research organizations.
