Diabetes Care

Leading the Fight Against Diabetes

According to the World Health Organization, 422 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes, particularly in low and middle-income countries. Our endocrinology department at Skåne University Hospital covers all aspects of diabetes, from metabolic control to prevention and treatment of complications. It serves as both a referral centre for southern Sweden and as a national centre for second opinions in diabetes care. The department works closely with Lund University Diabetes Centre (LUDC), one of the largest centres in Europe, with one of the world’s largest and best diabetes biobanks.

Specialist training program, fellowship

We are a recognised leader in identifying causes of the disease.

Based on our successful model, the team at Lund university hospital and Skåne Care has also provided long-term support and training to a diabetes centre in the United Arab Emirates with great success. We are proud to have brought the swedish standard abroad, saving both more lives and costs.

The efficient use of the Day-Care Clinic has reduced the need of admission to the hospital. As an extension of the Day-Care Clinic and aligning with modern day philosophy of diabetes care, patients are offered group-education in form of 3-5 day long multi-disciplinary “Diabetes Schools”.

The Diabetes Foot Clinic is judged as top global standard, and the number of above ankle amputations is comparable to the best international levels. The clinic offers new modalities like autologous cell therapy in our treatment options, which have worldwide recognition for outstanding quality.

The Gestational Diabetes Clinic cares for pregnant women with known diabetes or identified gestational diabetes. The activities at the clinic have been nationally acknowledged as the weight of babies delivered by mothers with type 1 diabetes is similar to that delivered by women without the disease. The result is unique on a global level.

Our staff are also regular lecturers in Sweden and abroad. Our diabetes experts at both LUDC and Skåne University are internationally recognized, with published articles in leading international science and medical journals around the world. We are happy to share the knowledge and experiences in this field.
