Applying for medical treatment

Frequently asked questions

Is Skåne Care a healthcare provider?
No. Skåne Care is the point of entry to Swedish public healthcare in Region Skåne for international, non-EU patients. If the public healthcare providers cannot offer the requested service, we can draw on selected private providers. Skåne Care is the coordinating link between the international patient and the healthcare provider, including coordination of patient information, logistics and payments.

Who can apply for care through Skåne Care?
Patients not resident in the EU who finance their care through personal funding or through sponsorship, for instance through an insurance company or state funding.

I am an international citizen resident in Sweden (i.e. resident for longer than 1 year and holder of a Swedish ID number, “personnummer”), can I apply for medical care through Skåne Care?
No. Skåne Care coordinates medical referrals from non-EU residents. Please contact your local healthcare centre (“vårdcentral”) for help.

I am an international citizen, temporarily resident in Sweden (less than 1 year), can I apply for medical care through Skåne Care?
Yes. Please send a medical treatment application form to info@skanecare.com.

I am a Swedish citizen resident in a non-EU country and I wish to get medical care in Sweden, should I go through Skåne Care?
Skåne Care is your entry point if you were not registered as resident in Skåne before moving from Sweden. If you were registered in Skåne before you moved from Sweden, please contact the relevant department at the hospital directly.

I am an asylum seeker in Sweden, should I go through Skåne Care for specialist care?
If you have an LMA card you should go to your healthcare centre for a referral to see a specialist, Skåne Care do not coordinate LMA patients. If you are not from an EU member state and want to pay for elective specialist care yourself, you may be able to apply for care through Skåne Care. A valid ID or passport is required.

I am from the EU and want to pay for healthcare in Sweden through my insurance company or by personal funding, i.e. I will not claim reimbursement based on the EU Directive after completion of care. Can I apply for healthcare through Skåne Care?
No. All EU patients, including those who pay with their own means, should turn directly to the relevant hospital with their query.

I need to visit a general practitioner at a primary healthcare centre, can I book an appointment through Skåne Care?
No. Skåne Care coordinates specialist healthcare. Please contact your local healthcare centre (“vårdcentral”) for help.

How long does it take to get an evaluation of my medical records?
1-2 weeks.

Which medical records should I attach to my application?
All medical records relevant for your request and not older than 3 months. Any x-ray images should be on a CD and sent to us by courier.

Can I get information about the cost of my treatment in advance?
Prices are set individually and will be shared with you together with a plan of care once the evaluation of your medical records is done by the clinic.

How long does it take to get an appointment through Skåne Care?
Appointments are booked based on the severity and urgency of a patient’s condition. The decision to accept a patient rests with the care provider, not Skåne Care.

Which type of payments are accepted by Skåne Care?
Only bank transactions. No cash payments are accepted. Details regarding our bank account can be found on the invoice sent to you in advance of treatment. If you fund the medical care yourself the full amount has to be paid in advance.

What happens if the cost of my treatment turns out to be less than the advance payment?
After completed medical care, you will be sent a detailed inventory of the services/interventions that you have received and the related costs. Any excess advance payment will be paid back to you.

I have paid an advance payment but have not been granted a visa to enter Sweden. What happens next?
SC will transfer back the whole amount to your account.
